How often have you heard 'we got over X applications for this job' where X is some huge number. On Linkedin you can sometimes see how many others have applied. So how to you make sure you can keep yourself in the game during that first sift of CVs.

Here at SpotlightCV we think there are a number of key things to do.

1. Read the JD and read it again!

There's nothing more important. Your CV needs to be tailored to the job, and the only way to do that is to read and re-read that JD until you fully understand what's behind what they're asking for.

2. Craft your CV examples to fit the JD

Once you've fully understood the JD, you've got to go back to your CV to ensure it maps to the requirements. This might take some time, but that's OK because the other option of just sending in your existing boilerplate CV won't get you anywhere.

3. Really highlight the relevant skills

If the JD is asking for someone with problem solving skills, you should give an example that shows you have that skill but then you can also call it out to make it super clear. Maybe even in a 'skills' section of the CV.

4. Try and send it through to someone at the company (as well as the standard application route)

People give differing advice on this, but I'd say you've got nothing to lose by doing this. Particulary if you have a connection there already.

5. Get your CV verified with SpotlightCV

Of course we'd say this, but by indicating that you've already had your CV verified, you're building trust and credibility with the recruiter - plus they may not have seen this idea before and might like it! If nothing else, it's memorable.
